Sian has been running a weekly meme of Me on a Monday for a good while now and I'm pleased to say it's had a new year shake up! I didn't get chance to join in last week (first week back in work and our most busiest time of year) but today I am posting my first Memorandum Monday.
The idea being that we share something new we have done for the first time or something we learnt over the weekend.
So I learnt two things over the weekend. Firstly, that it is never too early to teach your children to be money savvy. A sit down with a cup of tea to watch Martin Lewis and his money saving show got me looking at switching bank accounts. Well, Alex was watching with me and asked if she could get a better deal and the good news is she can! A quick search on the Martin's
website and we found a better account that gives her an extra 2% interest. Not to be sniffed out now she is earning her own money! So forms were duly completed ready for her to go in to the bank and open the account this week...on her own. On her own! She is getting more and more independent. Her words to me after this little exercise... I'm glad you showed me this mum, why don't they have classes on this in school!
The second thing learnt on Saturday was that there are
Headstart courses in the Summer holidays at various Universities around the UK that are a great opportunity to experience Uni life and get a taste for the course you want to do. I'm finding this whole Uni search a minefield but gradually making my way through it. I think I could write a book of useful hints and tips when I've finished!
Anyway, back to the story. We reviewed the options, enlisted Dad's help to write a 200 word personal statement (it's what he does best!) and one application form later and she has applied for some courses in July. The demand is usually very high so fingers crossed she gets one and thanks to a chance conversation with one of my fellow Brownie leaders on Saturday over hot chocolate!
All in all, a very productive weekend. Add to that, that we celebrated her 17th birthday on Saturday (I'm counting that as something new as I've never been the mother of a 17 year old before!) and it was a very educational weekend :)
Thanks got to
Sian for mixing things up a little. I've enjoyed sharing my experiences and hope that they may help someone else out there in blogland.
Happy Monday to the rest of the MM's!
